What Does Your Tattoo Represent?
By panap in Society | 0 comments
As in many forms of art, symbols with universal meanings are used to convey a particular thought, idea, feeling or other meaning to the viewer and to the artwork itself, and sometimes reflects upon the artist. This practice includes the art of producing tattoos and the images they contain. Skull tattoos speak to a tradition of representation of mortality. As the only constant of the human condition, mortality is understood and revered, or feared, differently depending on the culture; however, an image of a skull is widely understood to represent mortality. Accompanying images and designs often clarify the meaning, adding specificity that reflects the beliefs of the person adorning him- or herself with this symbol. Similarly, heart tattoos often symbolize love or life, and surrounding or inclusive images clarify the base meaning. For example, the image of an arrow through a heart typically symbolizes some sort of heartbreak or love lost. Symbols are iconic and powerful, and permanently applying them to one’s body is not a decision to be made lightly. Because whatever symbol you choose will be applied to the dermis, ensuring you are happy with the symbol’s meaning is imperative to your long-term satisfaction with the overall design.
